YARPP Stats

Over at my SKJAM! Reviews blog, one of the widgets I have installed is YARPP (Yet Another Related Posts Plug-in), which gives a list at the end of each post of other posts on the blog that may be relevant to the reader's interests if they liked this post. Now that I have well over a thousand review posts to choose from, I decided to check which posts were the most recommended by this tool.

Patterns I noticed: Anthologies do well, probably because having multiple stories means that I've used multiple tags that will then intersect with other post's tags. Having common words in the title helped too, like "stories" or "death." (Books in the genres I read tend to have a lot of death.) Posts tend to be recommended much more after the date they were posted on than before that date.

Single word titles did poorly as a group; almost all posts got at least one reference link; the notable exception being the eighth volume of Vinland Saga, which was completely overshadowed by the other nine volumes.

The most referenced posts were seldom the most viewed, or necessarily the best-reviewed items. I'm posting the list of posts that got at least ten reference links for your possible amusement or comment. Stats as of July 11 2020.

Great Thrillers: 101 Suspenseful Tales-119
Great Supernatural Stories: 101 Horrifying Tales-104
Classic American Short Stories-103

The Big Book of Sherlock Holmes Stories-68
The Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror 2014-45
Showcase Presents: Super Friends-33
The Complete Stories of Robert Bloch Volume 3-32
Showcase Presents: Weird War Tales Vol 1-30

Showcase Presents: DC Comics Presents Superman Team-Ups-28
Sisters of the Revolution: a Feminist Speculative Fiction Anthology-28

Jewish Noir-26
Showcase Presents: Robin the Boy Wonder Vol 1-26

The Collected Stories of Robert Silverberg, Volume 9: the Millenium Express (1995-2009)-18
Essential Defenders Vol 6-18
Shonen Jump Weekly (2016)-18

Black Jack the Movie-17
Dick Tracy-17
Insurrections of the Mind-17
Urusei Yatsura-17
Weekly Shonen Jump (2015)-17
Writers of the Future, Volume 34-17

The 36 Ancient Chinese Strategies for Modern Business-16
100 Wicked Little Witch Stories-16
The Black Lizard Big Book of Locked-Room Mysteries-16
The Blue Fairy Book-16
Case Closed Vol 62-16
Headstrong-16
Rad Women Worldwide-16
Rin-Ne Volumes 21, 24 & 26-16

The Book of Cthulhu-15
Cat Pictures Please and Other Stories-15
Conjunctions 51: the Death Issue-15
Essential Ms. Marvel Vol 1-15
Futaba-kun Change!
Mix CD--By Your Command

I changed my mind and decided that this year's holiday mix CD will be a tribute to the recently departed Glen A. Larson, who brought the young me such entertainment as "Battlestar Galactica" and "Knight Rider." The tracks relate to the shows he was involved with in tangential ways; see if you can guess which one is which.

BY YOUR COMMAND: A TRIBUTE TO GLEN A. LARSON

1. After the Fall--Two Steps from Hell
2. Theme from Lupin III '97--OST
3. Let's All Help the Cowboys--Cowboy Jack Clement & Pam Tillis
4. The Virginian--OST
5. Forever Fugitives--Final Fantasy XIII Soundtrack
6. Fighting--Maurice White & Bill Meyers
7. I Got a Woman--Jimmy Smith
8. I Will Not Stand Alone--Kayhan Kallor & Ali Bahrami Fard
9. Corpse in the Rafters--Robert O Ragland
10. Brothers--Nostromo Pilots
11. Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Star Blazers)--Maria Kawamura
12. Cardboard King--The Martin Harley Band
13. The NBC Mystery Movie--OST
14. Escape in the Truck--Mary Beth Magallanes
15. Limpin Gobbler/Crippled Turkey--Sean Orr
16. As Time Goes By--Rudy Vallee
17. Across the Sea--Ho'oheno
18. Hawaii 5-0--Sammy Davis, Jr.
19. Mon Super Heros--AM
20. Dragon Knight--Yasunori Mitsuda
21. All Along the Watchtower--Eliades Ochoa
22. I'll Fly Away/I Saw the Light--Joe Bethancourt

Not surprisingly, several of these are themselves television show themes.

Your thoughts, comments or favorite Glen A. Larson show memories?
SKJAM!

comments

Upcoming Mix CD

It's almost time to send out my yearly mix CDs for the holiday season.

This year I've decided to commemorate the centennial of the beginning of World War One. Any suggestions for what songs would fit? (They do not need to be period songs or about WWI, but if not, feel free to explain why they're relevant.)

Work is busy.

comments

I am busy trying to get an Associate's degree in Business Management from Rasmussen College, so I have been reading rather more business-related books than I would prefer to. As a result, Goodreads has some suggestions based on my "business" shelf.

I don't know how many of these are likely to have been read by my Dreamwidth and LJ friends, but let's find out.

Brand Failures: The Truth about the 100 Biggest Branding Mistakes of All Time by Matt Haig
Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success by Penelope Trunk
Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You by John Warrillow

Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping by Paco Underhill
Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture by Ellen Ruppel Shell
Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy

Different: Escaping the Competitive Herd by Youngme Moon
Do What You Are : Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type by Paul D.
Today's Goodreads recommendations are based on my "art" shelf, where I put books about art, books about artists and books about the artistic process.
Goodreads Recommends--Young Adult!

And now it's time to look at what Goodreads suggests based on my young adult shelf. I've been around since this category was called "juveniles", but most of the YA books I've read in the last decade or so were either manga or Harry Potter. So we're going to see a lot of manga and fantasy on here. (And a lot of what I read when I was actually back in junior high/high school was books off the adult shelves, which the librarian let pass because I was so clean-cut and a very strong reader.)

Alice 19th, Vol. 01: Lotis Master by Yuu Watase
Alichino by Kouyu Shurei
Angelic Layer, Vol. 01 by CLAMP
Angel Sanctuary, Vol. 1 by Kaori Yuuki
+ Anima 1 by Natsumi Mukai
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
Belgarath the Sorceror by David Eddings
Boys Over Flowers: Hana Yori Dango, Vol. 1 by Yoko Kamio
A Bride's Story 01 by Kaoru Mori

Chibi Vampire: The Novel, Volume 1 by Tohru Kai
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Vol. 1 by Ichirou Ohkouchi

Dawn of the Arcana, Vol. 01 by Rei Toma
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Descendants of Darkness, Volume 1 by Yoko Matsushida
The Devil Does Exist, Volume 1 by Mitsuba Takanashi
Dramacon, Volume 1 by Svetlana Chmakova

Electric Daisy, Vol. 1 by Kyousuke Motomi

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
From Far Away, Vol. 1 by Kyoko Hikawa

Gakuen Alice, Vol. 01 by Tachibana Higuchi

Hana-Kimi, Vol. 1 by Hisaya Nakajo
Hetalia: Axis Powers, Vol. 1 by Hidekaz Himaruya

Kamichama Karin, Vol. 01 by Koge-Donbo
Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Vol. 01 by Arina Tanemura
Kare Kano: His and Her Circumstances, Vol. 1 by Masami Tsuda
Kekkaishi, Vol. 01 by Yellow Tanabe

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Love*Com, Volume 1 by Aya Nakahara
Love Monster, Volume 1 by Riko Miyagi

Mars, Volume 01 by Fuyumi Soryo
MeruPuri, Vol. 01 by Matsuri Hino

Nodame Cantabile, Vol. 1 by Tomoko Ninomiya
Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Vol. 01 by Hiroshi Shiibashi

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Oresama Teacher, Vol. 1 by Izumi Tsubaki
Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 01 by Bisco Hattori

Peach Girl, Vol. 1 by Miwa Ueda
The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 1 by Takeshi Konomi

Red River, Vol. 1 by Chie Shinohara

Saturn Apartments, Vol. 1 by Hisae Iwaoka
Skip Beat!, Vol. 01 by Yoshiki Nakamura
The Story of Saiunkoku, Vol. 1 by Kairi Yura

The Tarot Cafe, #1 by Sang-Sun Park
Terrier by Tamora Pierce
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms by Fumiyo Kouno

Ultra Maniac, Vol. 01 by Wataru Yoshizumi

V.B. (Oh, I should mention that I finally moved Love Hina to "to-read" status.)

SKJAM!

comments

Goodreads Recommends--Foodie!

Hi folks!

One of the less populated shelves on my Goodreads account is "foodie." Cookbooks, books about cooks, books about food and drink, books that include a recipe for something or other, that sort of thing. So the list of books Goodreads recommends to me based on it is rather short. On the other hand, it's a very different selection from my other shelves.

Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: Confessions of Cooking for One and Eating Alone by Jenni Ferrari-Adler
Appetite for Life: The Biography of Julia Child by Noel Riley Fitch
The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen by Jacques Pepin

Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris by A.J. Liebling

A Cook's Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisines by Anthony Bourdain

French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork, and Corkscrew by Peter Mayle

The Gastronomical Me by M.F.K. Fisher

Heat: An Amateur's Adventures as Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta-Maker and Apprentice to Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany by Bill Buford
Home Cooking: A Writer in the Kitchen by Laurie Colwin
A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table by Molly Wizenberg

The Language of Baklava: A Memoir by Diana Abu-Jaber
Life, on the Line: A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat by Grant Achatz

The Man Who Ate Everything by Jeffrey Steingarten

On Rue Tatin: Living and Cooking in a French Town by Susan Herrmann Loomis

The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry: Love, Laughter and Tears at the World's Most Famous Cooking School by Kathleen Flinn
The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection by Michael Ruhlman
The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City by David Lebovitz

Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl
The Tenth Muse: My Life in Food by Judith Jones

The United States of Arugula: How We Became a Gourmet Nation by David Kamp

In related news, I'm currently reading a book about energy drinks. Oh and the book "Frances Elizabeth Willis" I reviewed recently at my blog had a surprise guest appearance by Julia Child.

Let me know if you've read any of these, or heard any interesting buzz. Or failing that, just plug your favorite book about food.

SKJAM!

comments

Hi folks!

I've enjoyed the last couple of weeks while recovering from the summer session of Rasmussen. Fall quarter starts Monday, bringing me classes in Finance, Economics, (more) Accounting and something called Business Capstone. Ouch.

Today, we look at a list of books recommended to me by Goodreads based on my anthology shelf. An anthology combines the pleasure of holding a good thick book in your hands with the convenience of a quick reading experience. And if you don't like one story, another will soon be along.

As always, let me know if you've read a book on this list, heard buzz about it, or have an anthology you'd plug.

Approaching Oblivion by Harlan Ellison
Axiomatic by Greg Egan

Bewere the Night by Ekaterina Sedia
Beyond Armageddon by Martin H.
