Goodreads Recommends--Foodie!

Hi folks!

One of the less populated shelves on my Goodreads account is "foodie." Cookbooks, books about cooks, books about food and drink, books that include a recipe for something or other, that sort of thing. So the list of books Goodreads recommends to me based on it is rather short. On the other hand, it's a very different selection from my other shelves.

Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: Confessions of Cooking for One and Eating Alone by Jenni Ferrari-Adler
Appetite for Life: The Biography of Julia Child by Noel Riley Fitch
The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen by Jacques Pepin

Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris by A.J. Liebling

A Cook's Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisines by Anthony Bourdain

French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork, and Corkscrew by Peter Mayle

The Gastronomical Me by M.F.K. Fisher

Heat: An Amateur's Adventures as Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta-Maker and Apprentice to Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany by Bill Buford
Home Cooking: A Writer in the Kitchen by Laurie Colwin
A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table by Molly Wizenberg

The Language of Baklava: A Memoir by Diana Abu-Jaber
Life, on the Line: A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat by Grant Achatz

The Man Who Ate Everything by Jeffrey Steingarten

On Rue Tatin: Living and Cooking in a French Town by Susan Herrmann Loomis

The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry: Love, Laughter and Tears at the World's Most Famous Cooking School by Kathleen Flinn
The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection by Michael Ruhlman
The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City by David Lebovitz

Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl
The Tenth Muse: My Life in Food by Judith Jones

The United States of Arugula: How We Became a Gourmet Nation by David Kamp

In related news, I'm currently reading a book about energy drinks. Oh and the book "Frances Elizabeth Willis" I reviewed recently at my blog had a surprise guest appearance by Julia Child.

Let me know if you've read any of these, or heard any interesting buzz. Or failing that, just plug your favorite book about food.

Goodreads Recommends--Oldies!

Continuing our look at what Goodreads recommends to me based on my bookshelves (which says something about me, but possibly more about the Goodreads hive mind.) Today's shelf is "oldies", where I put any book written before the 20th Century. This includes many books we think of as "classic literature" and others that are the 19th Century equivalent of (insert your least favorite trendy book here). Many of these recommendations you may have read for school.

Goodreads Recommend--Gender Bender!

Keeping on posting, this time we're going to look at a slightly more controversial area, books Goodreads has recommended to me based on my "gender bender" shelf. This includes both fanciful stories of boys turning into girls (and vice versa) using impossible means, and realistic stories involving more believable trans people. Not a genre so much as a theme, so most of the recommended works do not themselves have gender bending in them.

Aquaman, Vol. 1: The Trench by Geoff Johns
Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey

I've enjoyed the last couple of weeks while recovering from the summer session of Rasmussen. Fall quarter starts Monday, bringing me classes in Finance, Economics, (more) Accounting and something called Business Capstone. Ouch.

Today, we look at a list of books recommended to me by Goodreads based on my anthology shelf. An anthology combines the pleasure of holding a good thick book in your hands with the convenience of a quick reading experience. And if you don't like one story, another will soon be along.

As always, let me know if you've read a book on this list, heard buzz about it, or have an anthology you'd plug.

Goodreads Recommends--Animals!

Hi again! First, I'd like to remind you about the book giveaway at my blog, SKJAM! Reviews http://www.skjam.com which runs until 9/30/13.

This time, we look at books Goodreads is suggesting to me based on my Animals shelf, where I put books that either have animals as main characters or are heavily focused on animals. For example, a normal Western wouldn't count, but one about a cattle drive, or focusing on a cowboy's relationship with his horse would.

As you might expect, there's considerable overlap with the children's shelf.

As always, please feel free to comment if you've read any of these books or heard interesting buzz about them.

six rabbits, two kangaroos, six bears, three pigs, five owls, two ravens, six mice, two tigers, peacock, five doves, lion, elephant, penguin, thirteen humans, chicken, fox. wolf, eight fish, nine ducks, four cats, ten dogs, two frogs, seven geese, two giraffes, two apes, parrot, two monkeys, bovine, fly, crocodile, unclassified monster, deer, otter, cricket, bat, other bird, turtle, three dinosaurs and two horses.
