The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) dir. Henry Selick

Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King, the genius auteur who leads Halloween Town each year in creating the holiday. But it's the same holiday every year, and he's bored. This year, after his own duties are done, Jack wanders far afield and discovers the doors to other holiday towns. In specific, he finds Christmas Town, something completely alien to his experience. Jack doesn't understand it, but he decides he has to have it.

Jack's enthusiasm and social status carry the rest of Halloween Town to assist him in taking over Christmas from Santa Claus, including abducting the jolly old fellow himself. The only dissenter is Sally, a patchwork woman who has Cassandra-like abilities, seeing that this plan will end in disaster but not being able to make Jack or anyone else listen to her warning. But then Jack also hasn't noticed her crush on him.

Jack nearly succeeds at ruining Christmas, but perhaps it's not too late if he can retrieve Santa.

This movie is certainly an achievement in stop-motion animation. The character designs are nifty, and the motion is expertly done. For that aspect, top marks.

The story, though, was only so-so. I never felt truly engaged with the characters. The most interesting character was minor villain Oogie Boogie (voiced by Ken Page with energy) who almost makes his actions seem menacing, and has one of the two good songs in the movie. (The other is of course "This is Halloween", which opens the movie.)

I think part of the problem for me is that both holidays are divorced from their spiritual/religious significance. Without those overtones, the stakes seem trivial--Christmas and Halloween simply become about the trappings, rather than the "something more." Jack and Sally mention that something feels missing, but neither they or the movie understand what that is.

Content note: Gruesome imagery, some younger or more sensitive viewers may have a hard time.

Recommended to stop-motion animation fans.

One of the small benefits of working at Target is access to stuffed toys of Bullseye, the Target dog. We get some of them as gifts or prizes, and others can be purchased at the company store. Over the last decade, dozens of different Bullseyes have come out in various outfits. Some of my coworkers' cubicles look like the Daisy Hill puppy farm.

So when it came time to decorate for Halloween, our local creative person did up a cubicle as a street that the various costumed Bullseyes (and some other stuffed animals in Target gear) are going trick-or-treating on. Here's a picture of some of them.

enjoy!

Twisted my ankle Thursday morning coming down the front steps of my apartment building. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to have done any permanent damage, though still a bit sore.

Went to the MAS Halloween party the same night--it was pretty fun. The masquerade winner was a bit of a surprise, not so much best costume as best poses.

Still trying to catch up at work, since I missed the days last week. Even working overtime today only skimmed the surface.

In the afternoon, I went to the library to get some scans for Scans Daily. The scanner at my station was giving an error report, and the information desk librarian called tech support. An hour later, she called them again, this time getting a response. Unsurprisingly, the tech's suggestion (after checking the connection again) was to restart the computer. Also unsurprisingly, doing that voided my reservation, and the next person in line jumped up. It took some negotiation with him, the librarian, and a third patron who didn't understand the concept of reservations to get me back on the computer. This time the scanner worked, but I had to cut it short due to lack of remaining time. More to do next week, I guess.

So, today, we wrapped up the United Way basket for this week's raffle. It's really impressive, especially with the giant spider one of my co-workers crafted to put on the top. (Another department's worker complained that we have too many creative people to compete against.)

As mentioned previously, the theme this year was Halloween, and we got a good assortment of items. Take a gander at the list!

Books: Blood Lite, Dracula, Eerie Mysteries August 1938 (reprint), Frankenstein, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Candy: Child's Play Assortment, Farley's Candy Combo, Funsize Mix, High-Chew (four flavors), M&Ms Cool Ghoul Mix (dark chocolate and peanut varieties) and Market Pantry Caramels.

CDs: After Dark, The Crow Soundtrack Album and Nightmare Revisited.

Decor and Accessories: Halloween Glitter Paper, paper plates, stickers, photomat/cardstock, LARGE spider, small spiders, (empty) Treat Bags, Pumpkin Bell, Canbat, Gelriffic Window Clings, paper cups, Halloween plasticware, Pumpkin Carving Kit, Minilights in Candy Corn and Dual, Halloween tealights, Mini Gravestone, Domo Qee collectible figure and a Johnny Lightning Mummy Truck.

DVDs: April Fools' Day/My Bloody Valentine Double Feature, Dark Ride, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, A Haunting in Connecticut, Land of the Dead, Little Sheep of Horrors (from the people who brought you Wallace and Gromit), Petshop of Horrors, The Pit and the Pendulum and Reborn from Hell 1 & 2.

Graphic Novels/Manga: I Luv Halloween, Mermaid Saga (2 volumes), Reiko the Zombie Shop (2 volumes), The Walking Dead and War on Flesh.

Plus: a $25 Target gift card for anything else your Halloween party might need.

Man, that's a good haul. I'm tempted to buy tickets myself. None of the other baskets I've seen are quite so over the top, but there are some good ones, like the international food basket. There's two "pet" baskets, one designed around you already having a pet, and the other if you are thinking of getting one in the near future. And two mystery baskets--I'm not buying tickets for the one in Vikings colors.
